Friday February 21st, 2025
6:00pm to 8:00pm

Instituto Cervantes, Manchester, 326-330 Deansgate Manchester M3 4FN

The Instituto Cervantes Manchester invites you to a unique evening where you can experience young Latin American indigenous artists who bridge tradition and innovation through their music. 17-year-old Mapuche singer-songwriter Pukka Malen from Argentine Patagonia will perform her deeply personal songs, exploring the search for identity and the pain of her people. Meanwhile, Runa Rap, an innovative Ecuadorian group, blends Andean rhythms with hip-hop to celebrate Kichwa Otavalo culture.

Together, these artists represent a new generation of Latin American indigenous musicians striving to preserve their culture while addressing the historical and contemporary challenges faced by their communities through their art. The evening will also feature Luma Trio, a band based in Liverpool and led by Chilean brothers Francisco and Óscar Carrasco, who will take the audience on an exciting journey through the vibrant musical heritage of the continent, blending traditional and contemporary instruments to weave melodic stories.

This event is a co-production of the Indigenous Youth Cultures and New Media project at the University of Manchester, the Instituto Cervantes, and the radio programme Somos with Cecilia Ramos from All FM, and is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.

Why Mother, Country Is Essential Viewing for Our Times

Why Mother, Country Is Essential Viewing for Our Times
