Through the film, Navarrete confronts his parents’ traumatic past while witnessing a new generation of Chileans rise up against an economic system imposed during the dictatorship. As the family revisits significant locations in Chile, the documentary blends personal stories with the broader political landscape, exploring the country’s collective memory and its struggle for a better future.
Pablo Navarrete, a British-Chilean journalist and documentary filmmaker, is known for his work focusing on social and political issues in Latin America. As the founder of Alborada Films, Navarrete has produced several documentaries that challenge dominant narratives about the region. MOTHER, COUNTRY marks a departure from his previous work, offering a more personal exploration of his family’s story, while still addressing the broader political and social context of Chile.
Navarrete’s work is deeply rooted in his heritage, his dedication to documenting the struggles of Latin American communities against oppression has earned him recognition as a leading voice in independent filmmaking.

The documentary offers a deeply personal exploration of the scars left by Chile’s 1973 military coup, as seen through the eyes of Navarrete and his parents, who were forced to flee Chile as political refugees. Following the screening and Q&A session, the evening will continue with a live performance by Grupo Luma, Liverpool’s very own Latin American group led by Chilean brothers Francisco & Oscar Carrasco. The band plays a mixture of original songs and songs from across Latin America; taking the audience on a journey of the continent through its rich musical heritage.
