If you’re a lover of vibrant culture, live music, and community spirit, then Liverpool Forró Festival is calling your name. This independently run event, created by the passionate duo Marina and Filipe of Forró Liverpool, returns this May with its second annual celebration of the infectious Brazilian dance style, Forró.
What is Forró?
Originating in the northeast of Brazil, Forró is far more than a dance – it’s a cultural phenomenon that blends elements of indigenous culture, African roots and European heritage into one dynamic, soulful experience. The name comes from forrobodó, meaning a party or a lively gathering, which captures the essence of the scene: warmth, connection, and community.
Musically, Forró encompasses a range of rhythms such as Xote, Baião, and Xaxado, often played with a traditional trio of accordion, triangle, and zabumba drum. The dance itself is intimate and expressive, with styles like Pé-de-Serra (literally “foot of the mountain”), Roots, Universitário, and the fast-paced arrastapé, each offering something unique for dancers of all levels.
Today, Forró has taken root well beyond Brazil, blossoming into a global community with classes, festivals, and social dances happening across Europe and beyond. Whether you’re drawn in by the rhythm, the warmth, or the opportunity to connect, Forró offers a welcoming world where everyone can find their step.
Meet Forró Liverpool
Founded in 2020 by Recife-born Marina and Filipe, Forró Liverpool has been instrumental in nurturing a growing community of dancers and music lovers in the city. Inspired by their early days dancing in Pernambuco, the pair now teach regular open-level classes, host advanced workshops with guest teachers from Brazil and live music events. With its welcoming, grassroots energy, Forró Liverpool is a true cultural hub for anyone keen to experience authentic Brazilian dance and music.
