Liverpool’s FACT gallery invites you on an immersive journey with Cosmotechnics, a ground-breaking exhibition of immersive art installations by four Latin American artists and collectives, that redefines technology’s role through nature and culture. Curated by Beatrice Zaidenberg, FACT’s 2024 Curator-in-Residence, Cosmotechnics runs from Friday, 8 November 2024, through Sunday, 26 January 2025.
In this multi-sensory experience, Zaidenberg envisions each installation within Cosmotechnics as a portal, where plants act as shapeshifters, allies, and mediators between the past, present, and future. Through these portals, visitors are encouraged to consider how plants can guide the development of technologies that reflect and respect diverse societies, ecologies, and cultures, drawing from the wisdom of local communities.
Atractor Studio and Semantica, Patricia Domínguez, and Rebeca Romero challenge the idea that technology is universal across all cultures. Their featured artworks, spanning sculpture, moving image, and sound, invite visitors to reflect on their own understanding of technology, while exploring how local ways of thinking and sensing can lead to new ways of embracing art and culture.
Featured Works
- Atractor Studio and Semantica present A Tale of Two Seeds (2023), an award-winning sound and video installation that reveals the impact of industrial agriculture on Colombia’s soil and communities, using sound to highlight the human and ecological struggle against exploitative practices.
- Patricia Domínguez introduces Tres Lunas más Abajo (2024) and Matrix Vegetal (2022), meditative works developed between CERN in Switzerland and the European Southern Observatory in Chile. Her installations explore the digital and spiritual connections between all life forms and propose compassionate alternatives to today’s environmental crises.
- Rebeca Romero unveils Chrysalis (2024), an interactive sculpture inspired by ancient psychoactive plants, alongside Codex I and II (2024). Drawing from pre-Columbian iconography, Romero explores how technology might recover sacred beliefs from the past, blending tradition and innovation to imagine a future where nature and technology coexist harmoniously.
Curatorial Vision
Zaidenberg brings Cosmotechnics to life, inspired by philosopher Yuk Hui’s theory that technology can evolve alongside local cosmologies—spiritual, ecological, and cultural understandings of the world. “This exhibition highlights technology’s potential to connect us with the environment,” Her vision encourages a sustainable, collaborative future grounded in collective well-being and ecological respect.
