On September the 11th 1973, a violent coup in Chile overthrew Salvador Allende, leading to nearly 17 years of dictatorship under Augusto Pinochet, causing widespread repression, forced disappearances, and mass exile. Over 2,000 Chileans fled their homeland to the UK, including over 300 refugees who were welcomed to Sheffield and Rotherham, aided by a network that included the Chile Solidarity Campaign, Trade Unions and the World University Service.
Told through first-hand accounts, archive footage, and music, Chileans of the North brings to life the experiences of these exiles—the trauma of leaving Chile, the challenge of starting over in a foreign land, and the unbreakable spirit that helped them rebuild their lives. It’s a story that spans 50 years and two continents and is a moving testament to the power of community, resilience, and activism.
After the screening, a live Q&A will offer deeper insights into the documentary and its themes, featuring:
Chris Paul – Director of Chileans of the North
Francisco Carrasco – CEO and Founder of Luma Creations
John McEvoy – Co-director of Britain and the Other 9/11
