Exhibition – RECLAMA

Harnessing Afro-Ecuadorian Women’s Heritage
Explore the rich tapestry of Latin American arts and cultures at St George’s Hall Visitor Centre, featuring a captivating exhibition running from September 10th to October 10th.

RECLAMA (Recuperando y Celebrando la Herencia de las Mujeres Afroecuatorianas) is a pioneering decolonial, anti-racist, and feminist research project focused on strengthening and supporting the cultural resilience of Afro-descendant Black women in Esmeraldas, situated on Ecuador’s northern Pacific coast. Through in-depth interviews and active community participation, this project aims to document and preserve the region’s rich cultural heritage. Community researchers and memory keepers have shared their stories and artistic expressions to foster peace and sisterhood, fight against sexist and racist violence, and promote sustainable development in Esmeraldas. By sharing this knowledge, RECLAMA makes these traditions more visible.

In an inspiring collaboration with Luma Creations, RECLAMA is set to extend its reach to Liverpool. As part of La Feria, the Visitors Centre at St George’s Hall will host an exhibition of the project’s research and creative works, free and open to the public from 10th September to 10th October. This exhibition will highlight key aspects of Afro-Ecuadorian women’s heritage such as aesthetics, spirituality, gastronomy, and traditional medicine. These cultural elements are vividly brought to life through various artistic mediums, celebrating and preserving the vibrant legacy of Afro-Ecuadorian women for future generations.
